Council Services:

Calibration Service - Weights and Measures

Lincolnshire County Council Trading Standards Service is responsible for maintaining the local standards of weights and measures for the County.

These standards are kept in a purpose built environmentally controlled metrology laboratory and are directly traceable to national standards.

The department checks all weighing and measuring equipment used for trade.  This ensures that the kilo of meat in the butchers, pint of beer in the pub and litre of petrol at the garage are all correctly measured.

All premises in the County from which goods are sold by retail, wholesale or manufacturing, receive routine visits from officers to ensure that what is stated on the package is a true indication of what quantity is actually in it.  More time is now spent checking goods at source to ensure problems are resolved before the goods leave the factory.  This is done using sophisticated electronic scales and computers, and applying techniques of statistical sampling.

It is not just food that receives our attention.  All products subject to weighing and measuring control receive equal attention.  This can range from honey to heating oil, rice to ready mix concrete and toothpaste to tarmac.
