Council Services:

Food Safety

In Lincolnshire, the County Council's Trading Standards Service is responsible for ensuring that food products are properly labelled and meet the standards required by law.

Everyday, our officers are checking the labelling, content and descriptions of foods to protect the consumer and to help businesses comply with food law.  This ongoing work seeks to guarantee that the food produced and consumed in the county is safe and will meet public expectations.

We are also responsible for the safety and quality of most animal feeding stuffs, whether for pets or farm animals. We are also involved in monitoring standards of animal welfare on farms, during transport and at the market. We also help to maintain disease free livestock through the operation of controls on animal movement and cleansing and disinfection.

Responsibility for the enforcement of the Food Safety Act 1990 (the primary piece of legislation concerning food) is shared with our colleagues from the District Council Environmental Health Departments who, amongst other things, are responsible for hygiene issues surrounding food premises.

We have produced a pack of information aimed at businesses who produce, package, import or sell food, offering guidance on the legislation affecting this area and advice on how to comply with the law. To view this pack online, please follow the "Food Labelling" link below.

  • Food Labelling

There are certain obligations and responsibilities to consider if you produce, package, import or sell food.

  • Food safety - infectious diseases

The law requires that most food businesses are registered with the local authority for the area in which the business trades.
