Council Services:

Historical Searches - Birth

Details of how the Registration Service can help you with specific certificates or searches in the local area.

Getting Started

There are many ways to begin researching your family history:

  • Talk to older family members and write down what they can remember.
  • Look through family documents and memorabilia.
  • Study any certificates that you already have.
  • Check relevant papers and photographs.

Books and monthly publications relating to Family History can provide useful advice. You can buy these from bookstores and newsagents or borrow them from your local library.

What next

We can help with searching for specific birth, marriage and death certificates but we only have indexes of births that occurred within the Lincolnshire registration district.

Searching for a birth from 1837 onwards

You can carry out a general search of the indexes personally
Your visit must be booked in advance and an appropriate fee paid.  You’ll get access to the indexes of registered births but not the registers themselves.

The fee covers any number of successive hours (not exceeding six) spent searching.

You can order any identified certificate by completing an application form (see Attachments section) and paying the appropriate fee.

You may apply for a specific certificate

If we are given accurate details of a birth, we can make a search on your behalf.  If you’re unsure of the exact date of the certificate, we can search two years either side of a chosen date.

It is not possible for staff to carry out indefinite searches on your behalf.

Further information

Lincolnshire libraries can offer other help and information about the county. They have relevant local publications and often hold census records on microfiche or microfilm.

Lincolnshire Archives hold:

  • records of baptisms, marriages and burials;
  • census returns;
  • the International Genealogical index;
  • microfiche indexes of all births, deaths and marriages from 1837 to 1983.

Many websites offer help and information on genealogy. You can also buy various computer programs to help you organise and store data.
