Thursday night will see specialist Highways crews onsite to repair the extensive damage caused
Lincolnshire County Council is carrying out emergency repairs on the A16 at Crowland after a lorry fire last night which left the road surface damaged and contaminated with diesel.
Crews were on site early this morning to make the area safe, clear debris and deal with the diesel spill so the road could be reopened. The surface has been stabilised for now, but the damage caused by the fuel means that the remaining road surface will not last long. Emergency repairs are therefore planned for Thursday night.
The works will require a temporary road closure which, under normal circumstances, would see traffic diverted via the A47, but ongoing works elsewhere on the network make that impossible. On this occasion, vehicles will be routed through Crowland using the old A16.
The works are expected to take one night to complete.
A spokesperson for Lincolnshire Highways said the council will be charging the full costs of the response and repairs to those who have caused the damage, adding: “The fire caused significant damage to the carriageway and the diesel contamination means we have to act quickly.
"We’ve made the road safe for now, but the surface will fail if we don’t carry out these emergency works. The diversion is not our usual route, but it’s the only viable option while other schemes are underway.”
LC Highways is asking drivers to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys while the repairs take place.
