FAQs - Adoption

Who can apply to adopt?

Married, unmarried, gay/lesbian, individuals and couples can adopt a child.  In Lincolnshire couples will need to have lived together for at least two years.

What is the age limit?

Prospective adopters need to be over 21 years old.  Applicants wishing to adopt a baby under 12 months will normally need to be no older than 39 years of age.  If you wish to adopt older children, we prefer there to be no more than 45 years between one parent and the child.

Are there lots of children available for adoption?

There are actually few babies available to adopt.  However, we do need adoptive placements for children who are aged from 1 to 8 years old who may have brothers and sisters. There are many older children who need adoption too.

What is the process for adoption?

The procedure is very similar to that of Fostering.  Details can be found in our information pack - the section on the application process.

What will adoption mean financially?

Adoption allowances are subject to means testing but may be paid in some situations and are generally awarded for sibling groups, or a child with special needs. The allowance is paid in respect of the child’s needs and cannot be attached to adopters.  Adoption allowances are subject to an annual review.  Adopters can claim child benefit, tax credits or disability living allowance like any other parents.

Are there any health matters I should know about?

To provide children we look after with the best possible outcomes, we have to consider healthy lifestyle issues with anyone wishing to adopt. Further details can be found in our Healthy Lifestyle Section in the information pack.

What is the difference between adoption and fostering?

Children who are adopted become the legal responsibility of the adoptive parents, whereas children who are fostered remain the responsibility of the Local Authority.
