Notes:
In the middle of the village of Old Bolingbroke is the ruin of its medieval castle. Bolingbroke Castle is famous as the birthplace of Henry Bolingbroke who became King Henry IV in 1399. The Castle was held for the King during the English Civil War (1642-1648) and suffered a brief siege in 1643. The castle capitulated when a Royalist relieving force was routed nearby at Winceby and it was then partly demolished. The town that had grown up around the castle continued to flourish as an estate centre for the Duchy of Lancaster, although the castle was not rebuilt. In the 1960s the surviving walls were excavated and the castle is now open to the public with display boards erected by English Heritage. The Friends of Bolingbroke organise events at the castle and offer guided tours for groups throughout the year.
