Council Services:

Adoption

At the present time, we have prospective or approved adopters for children in the 0 - 2 age range though we are still taking applications and would like to hear from people who would consider pre-school children with a certain amount of uncertainty around their future development as well as people who are willing to consider babies with additional needs or that have gone through a drug withdrawl process.

We are particularly interested in hearing from individuals and couples for:

  • school age children (5 years plus)
  • sibling groups including siblings where there is quite a wide age range or more than 3 children.
  • children and babies with a measure of disability or special educational needs
  • children who exhibit challenging behaviour
  • children with uncertain developmental futures
  • children who need to continue to have contact with birth family members - perhaps siblings or grandparents as well as birth parents. This could include children who would need to see birth relatives on occasions during the year.

Our children come from an extensive range of backgrounds, with diverse experiences and personalities, so an equally wide variety of families are needed. There is no formal criteria of eligibility, all applicants will be considered on their own merit and on their ability to meet a child’s needs throughout their childhood and into adulthood, though in most cases applicants are expected to be able to show enough financial stability to raise the children that are placed. Adoption support is provided and may include financial support however this will be means tested. Once you have contacted us about becoming an adoptive parent you will need to go through the following stages;

  •     Registration of interest completed by Customer Service Centre
  •     Initial Home Visit
  •     Statutory references taken up, including medicals
  •     Preparation Group
  •     Home study
  •     Approval Panel Matching, including Information Sharing Meeting
  •     Matching Panel
  •     Introductions
  •     Placement for Adoption
  •     Adoption Order made
