Council Services:

Lincolnshire Archive records recognised

Archives Service records are amongst 38 national collections with outstanding national and international importance.

Records held at Lincolnshire County Council's Archives Service have been named as amongst 38 national collections designated as having outstanding national and international importance.

The Archives in St Rumbold Street, Lincoln, were given this new status under the Museums Libraries and Archives Council's 'Designation Scheme', designed to recognise collections of outstanding national and international importance.

Mark Wood, Chair of the Museum Libraries and Archives Council, which manages the Designated Scheme, said:

"It's not just national institutions which hold our greatest treasures.  Some of the nation's most important collections are in regional and independent museums, libraries and archives across the country.  Under this important scheme, those collections are 'Designated' as being of outstanding national and international importance.  One of them is right here in Lincoln.  I hope that people will seize this opportunity to see this unique treasure right here on their doorstep."

The Bishops Rolls and Registers (dating from 1214/15) which form the core historical records of the diocese of Lincoln, are of 'national and international significance'. Owned by the diocese of Lincoln, they are currently housed, cared for and made accessible at Lincolnshire County Council's Archives.

As well as the Bishops Registers and Records, Lincolnshire Archives is a treasure trove of information on the history of Lincolnshire. Subjects covered by the records include the history of families, houses, villages, transport, crime and disorder, medical care, etc. The Archives holds maps, diaries, recipe books, probate records, civil records and many other documents written by your ancestors.

People wishing to undertake research in the registers can access some of them via the printed volumes of the Lincoln Record Society (available via the Library Service).  Microfilm copies and the complete series of original records are held at Lincolnshire Archives, St Rumbold Street, Lincoln, LN2 5AB.  People wishing to consult these items should telephone in advance to make an appointment on 01522 782040.
