Tennyson 2009
Alfred Tennyson, poetic voice of the 19th century, would have been 200 years old in 2009. He was born in Somersby, in the wolds of Lincolnshire, and his imagination was moulded with the beauty of the countryside of his childhood.
All across the county of Lincolnshire events are taking place to celebrate this son of our county. They range from the major art exhibition at The Collection, Tennyson Transformed (funded with a grant from the Heritage and Lottery Fund), to the Country Dance at Alford using music that Tennyson would have danced to; from walks in the villages of his childhood, to the Tennyson Society’s Conference at the University of Lincoln. Music from Convivium, Benjamin Zephaniah at the Lincoln Book Festival, the Lincolnshire Co-op’s Birthday Supper of poetry readings at The Collection all celebrating Tennyson’s Lincolnshire roots. Lincoln Central Library is home to the most significant archive of Tennyson material in the Tennyson Research Centre. A new heritage trail around East Lindsey celebrates the district’s close association with Tennyson.
