Safeguarding is everybody's business - adult abuse can happen to anyone, anywhere and responsibility for addressing it lies with us.
This applies to people aged eighteen and over and living in Lincolnshire.
Adults may be abused or taken advantage of by those in a position of power over them. Every adult has a right to:
- A life free of fear
- Be treated with dignity
- Have their choices respected and not be forced to do anything against their will
What kinds of people could be at risk of abuse?
Many adults especially older people and those with a physical and/or a learning disability rely on other people to help them in their day to day living.
They may be at risk from people they know such as a relative, friend, neighbour or paid carer. Sometimes people can be abused by a stranger.
Abuse can occur anywhere but it is likely to happen in their own home, in care homes, day care centres or hospitals.
What is abuse?
Abuse can be:
- Hitting, slapping or pushing
- Shouting or swearing which makes the person afraid
- Unwanted touching, kissing or sexual intercourse
- Money or property taken without consent or under pressure
- Not being cared for properly or denied privacy, choice or social contact
What should you do if you suspect abuse?
If you suspect that someone is being maltreated you can contact the Safeguarding Adults Team on 01522 782155 to report your concerns or ask for more information. If you need to contact us outside office hours, please phone our Emergency Duty Team on 01522 782333.
