Before giving notice of marriage, contact us to discuss the documents you'll need to bring with you.
Depending on your situation, these may include:
Your Identity and Nationality
When you give notice, you will need to produce evidence of your identity and nationality i.e. a current passport or a full birth certificate. If you do not have a passport and were born on or after 1.1.1983, in order to prove British nationality, you will also need to produce your mother’s current passport or birth certificate. If your mother is not British, please telephone for further advice before you attend your appointment.
Proof of Residence
You should provide a document showing your current address, such as:
- a driving licence
- medical card
- recent utility bill
- recent bank statement
- benefit book
- recent pay slip
- rent book.
Change of name deed
A deed poll is useful to show the name you are using. If the deed poll has not been registered, the words "name changed by deed poll" will not be shown on the:
- notice
- register
- or schedule.
A registered deed poll will have three stamps on it.
Divorce/Dissolution or Annulment Legal Documents
You'll need to show us proof if:
- you've been married or in a civil partnership before;
- either in this country or abroad and;
- the marriage/civil partnership ended in divorce/dissolution or annulment.
Divorced/Dissolution in England or Wales
We will need to see the court stamped original copy of:
- the decree absolute or
- final order of civil partnership dissolution.
Divorced/Dissolution in a foreign country
We will need to see:
- the original legal document issued in that country and
- an English translation, if the document is in a foreign language.
Most foreign divorces have to be referred to the Registrar General for validation and clearance. If no documents were issued in the foreign country contact us to discuss what we can accept as proof.
Annulment
Follow the same procedure for divorce as described above regarding:
- whether annulment was granted in or outside the UK;
- whether the final legal document (a decree absolute of nullity) was issued.
Death certificate of former spouse/civil partner
If you are a widow, widower or surviving civil partner we will need to see a certified copy of your late partner's death certificate.
If you are a widow we will also need to see your marriage certificate, unless your name is on your late husband's death certificate.
Please note:
- All documents must be current.
- Expired passports are not acceptable.
- Photocopies of any document are not acceptable.
This is an important consideration if you have recently moved house.
