A-Z of Council Services:

Precautionary salting is carried out on 3082km (1915 miles) of the County's 8960km (5567 miles) highway network by Lincolnshire County Council and the Highways Agency.

The Highway Agency carries out precautionary salting on all 92km (52 miles) of trunk roads

  • Lincolnshire County Council precautionary salts a priority network of 43 routes, which cover all the main traffic routes (The Strategic Network), and provides a treated link from each Main Village to the Strategic Network. Generally no other roads will be dealt with except where they are impassable due to severe snow conditions or during prolonged icy spells.
  • Lincolnshire County Council uses a fleet of 43 dedicated vehicles to spread salt at a rate of between 10-20 grammes per square metre when road frosts are forecast.
  • From the 1st October until 30th April highway engineers monitor, 24 hours a day, ten roadside weather stations equipped with both atmospheric and road sensors. The information from these sensors are used by the Met Office to prepare daily weather forecasts which enable highway engineers to predict when action is needed to keep the roads safe.
