For primary material related to Alfred Tennyson, Lincoln's Tennyson Research Centre in the dome of Lincoln Central Library, has no equal.  Researchers and visitors can sit amongst family libraries, looking at letters, diaries, proofs, manuscripts, critical and biographical works and a comprehensive collection of editions of Tennyson's works. Please follow the link for more information about the centre and how to arrange a visit.

In the same building, the Tennyson Exhibition, located near the children's library displays examples of the breadth of the Lincoln archive: Tennyson's hat and cloak, comb and medicine cup; letters, proofs amongst other items.

Lincolnshire Archives holds an extensive collection of the wider family's social and business papers.  See useful links.

GF Watts' Statue of Tennyson in the grounds of the Lincoln Cathedral is a fine example of early 20th century sculpture.  George Frederick Watts worked on the statue on a trolley which could be wheeled outside his workshop in Compton, Surrey.  It was never actually finished: in August 1903 Watts allowed the model to be cast but he did not live long enough to see it either cast or erected.  The maquette of the statue is in the Tennyson Research Centre.  Photographs and contemporary newspaper reports of the unveiling ceremony are also in the centre as is later material associated with restoration and detailed history of the statue's life.
