What is the Lincolnshire Coastal Study?
Lincolnshire’s coastline boasts some of the country’s most versatile agricultural land, a successful tourism industry and internationally-renowned nature conservation sites and its residents can feel justly proud. Unfortunately, with large areas at or below sea level, this is not immune from the impacts of climate change, like rises in sea level and more frequent storms.
The government has asked for more research about the implications for sustainable development in the face of sea level rises, as a consequence of climate change. This is to help prepare for a review of the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS), which guides future development in the East Midlands. This review will be published for public consultation in March 2010. For more information about the RSS, please click on the link at the bottom of the page.
The Lincolnshire Coastal Study Group was formed to look at this and consists of:
- Lincolnshire County Council
- the three coastal local authorities (East Lindsey District Council, Boston Borough Council and South Holland District Council)
- Government Office for the East Midlands (GOEM)
- East Midlands Development Agency (emda)
- Environment Agency
- Natural England
- East Midlands Regional Assembly (EMRA)
- Internal Drainage Boards
The group commissioned the Lincolnshire Coastal Study to investigate this in detail. The study is taking place between January 2009 and March 2010. It will produce a number of options looking forward 20, 50 and 100 years about how sustainable communities might be developed.
