Anchor Point:What are these?What are these?
It is important to Lincolnshire County Council to encourage the planting of trees and hedgerows to maintain and enhance the character of the landscape and create habitat for wildlife.
There are five different grants schemes running each year that contribute to the continuing improvement of Lincolnshire's natural environment.

The scheme is under review. We will inform you of the outcome in due course.
Trees for Lincolnshire Communities has been running for many years and in that time many thousands of trees and hedge plants have been planted in parishes throughout Lincolnshire.
This scheme will be targeted on public open spaces such as playing fields, cemeteries and beside public rights of way including roads (not verges).
Garden planting and schemes required through planning conditions are not eligible.
Native or locally characteristic species of trees and shrubs are available to parish councils; application forms are sent to parish clerks each summer. All responses must be through these specific contacts.
Each parish can apply for:
- up to 50 trees (60-90cm) with the option of tube and stake protection or;
- 500 hedge plants (30-60cm) with the option of spiral and cane protection or;
- A combination of trees and hedge plants where 1 tree equates to 10 hedge plants.
Allocation of plants is at the parish council's discretion but, in the interests of accountability, Environmental Management require applicants to mark on maps that we provide, where the trees or hedges are to be planted.
Applications must be received each year by the 30 September for plants to be provided the following winter, and plants are available for collection in early January from Horncastle.
Anchor Point:Hedges and Small Woodland GrantHedges and Small Woodland Grant
Lincolnshire County Council provides a grant for planting hedges and small woodlands in order to enhance the landscape and benefit wildlife.
Through the grant scheme Lincolnshire County Council will provide hedging plants and woodland trees (including protection) at 50% of the normal cost to the applicant. The maximum Lincolnshire County Council contribution towards each application in any one year will be £1000. For larger schemes it is possible to apply for the grant over a number of years.
Although not essential, preference my be given to schemes that make links between existing wildlife habitats or are accessible to the public.
The grant is open to anyone who owns or manages land within the county of Lincolnshire. However, we will not generally fund woodland schemes larger than 0.5 hectares and hedgerows longer than 1 kilometre, as these are better funded through other grant schemes. If your proposal exceeds this, please contact us for guidance.
Planting for private gardens and works required as a condition of planning permission are not eligible. Grants can not be awarded retrospectively.
Grants will not be awarded to schemes that have an adverse effect on historic or important sites for wildlife.
The closing date for applications each year is 30 September. We aim to make written grant offers, which show details of the 50% cost to applicants by 31 October. At which point you have the opportunity to either accept or decline our grant offer. Trees will generally be delivered in early January and an invoice will follow for your 50% contribution.

Anchor Point:Grants for Pond and Wetland CreationGrants for Pond and Wetland Creation
Lincolnshire County Council will provide a 50% grant up to a maximum of £500, for creating ponds and wetlands in order to increase biodiversity and enhance the landscape.
Although not essential, preference may be given to schemes that make links between existing habitats or landscape features or are accessible to the public.
The grant is open to anyone who owns or manages land. It cannot be used on farmland entered into Higher Level Schemes, but can be used in connection with the Entry Level Scheme.
Planting for private gardens and works required as a condition of planning permission are not eligible. Grants can not be awarded retrospectively.
Grants will not be awarded to schemes that have an adverse effect on historic or important sites for wildlife.
If you would like to create a pond or wetland area but need help with the application we are happy to provide a free advisory visit.

Anchor Point:Free Replacement TreesFree Replacement Trees
Where a landowner removes potentially dangerous roadside trees, there is a general amenity loss, as well as a reduction in wildlife habitat. In such circumstances Environmental Management can offer three free replacement trees for each tree felled plus materials for their protection, subject to the following conditions;
- All free trees and materials are collected from the site specified by the County Council.
- Planting sites shall be in the general vicinity of the original tree, on private land and not the highway verge.
- Work shall be carried out to the standard shown in the booklet "Practical Tree and Hedge Planting" obtainable on collection of plants.
- Future maintenance (applying on approved herbicide around the base of the trees for at least three years) is the responsibility of the applicant.
- Ownership of the trees becomes the responsibility of the landowner.
An application form is available in the Downloads box.
Anchor Point:Planting on the Highway VergePlanting on the Highway Verge
Planting on the highway verge is controlled by the Highway Authority, which must give permission for any planting.
If individuals or parish councils are considering tree planting (or other landscape enhancement works) on specific highway verges, please contact the Trees and Woodland Officer on 01522 782070.
We will also consider assisting with other landscape and wildlife enhancement projects and would be happy to hear your ideas.
