Council Services:

Re-register a birth

There are situations in which you may request your child's birth to be re-registered, such as to show the natural parents are now married or to add the father's details.

BOOK AN APPOINTMENT ONLINE

There is no fee for re-registering a baby's birth and certificates of a re-registered birth can be purchased for £10.

You can also book an appointment by calling 01522 782244 between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday and 9am and 4pm on Saturdays.

To show the natural parents are now married

If the natural parents have married each other since the birth was registered, the birth should be re-registered to accurately record the current legal status of the child.

The form (LA1), which is available from the registration service and can also be downloaded below, must be completed by both parents. Either parent can then attend the appointment, with the completed form and a copy of the marriage certificate.

The birth will be re-registered and it may be possible to change the child's surname, if required, as part of this process.

Adding the father's details

It may be possible to re-register the birth to include the father's details and change the child's surname, if the child's natural parents were

not married to each other at the time of the birth and the father's details were not originally registered.

The form (GRO185), which is available from the registration service and can also be downloaded below, must be completed by both parents.

The birth can be re-registered in one of the following ways:

  • the mother and father both attend the appointment to re-register the birth together
  • either parent makes a statutory declaration acknowledging parentage of the child. This must be witnessed by a solicitor or person legally able to witness an oath
  • either parent has obtained a court order naming the father

The Statutory Declaration of Parentage form is available from any registration officer in England and Wales and can also be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

To make other amendments or any queries about the re-registering process, call 01522 782244 or email regist@lincolnshire.gov.uk
