Council Services:

Witnesses

This section provides information for witnesses attending inquests in Lincolnshire.

Who decides which witnesses to summon?

The Coroner decides who should be summoned to give evidence as a witness at an inquest and the order that they will be heard in. If you believe that you have evidence or that a certain witness should be summoned, contact the Coroner’s Office. The coroner will then decide whether this evidence is relevant.

Must a witness attend the inquest?

If a witness lives in England or Wales they must attend if they have been summoned. It is an offence not to attend and the Coroner may issue a warrant enforcing the witness to attend or issue a fine for non-attendance.

Who can ask witnesses questions?

The Coroner will question the witness first and following this the Properly Interested Persons or their representatives may ask questions of the witness. The Coroner is responsible for deciding if these questions are relevant to the inquest.

If you have been summoned as a witness and have any specific access or participation requirements please contact the Coroner’s Office to inform them.
