Ecclesiastical archives and parish records

The ecclesiatical archives and parish records reflect the county’s varied religious denominations.

They tell the story of the influence of church and chapel in the lives of the people of Lincolnshire over the centuries. They also show the contribution made by individuals to the religious life of the county.

The important archive relating to Lincoln Cathedral includes many of the oldest archives held at Lincolnshire Archives, such as the writ of William the Conqueror establishing land for the site of the Cathedral in about 1072.

The archives include plans and drawings of the many fine Church of England parish churches, including the designs for many wonderful stained glass windows and wood carvings. They also relate to the organisation and people within church and parish. Denominations such as the Baptists, Methodists, Congregationalists, Presbyterians, Unitarians, Independents and the Society of Friends have also made their archives available to the public through the Archives service.
