Council Services:

Plan your visit

You can book archives resources over the phone or by e-mail. You can also book online if you have a valid County Archives Research Network (CARN) ticket that has been registered at Lincolnshire Archives.

Search room access

Booking of search room resources: computers, microfiche or microfilm viewers, study tables, the map tables and study booths is essential.

Advance requests for original documents are encouraged. To order up to six documents in advance of your visit, email with the full reference for each document (see the Lincs the Past website). Please make sure that advance requests reach us by 2.00pm on the previous open day (i.e. by 2.00pm on a Saturday for orders required on Tuesday, by 2.00pm on Tuesday for orders required on Wednesday, and so on).

If you do not know whether we have a particular document, call 01522 782040 and ask to speak to the search room staff.

If you require one of the three computers with free internet access you may reserve time slots during your visit.

You may take into the search room: notepads smaller than A4, pencils, loose sheets of paper, glasses, magnifying aids, reference books, maps and charts to help you with your research. Switch mobile phones to silent or leave in a locker.

Do not bring into the search room: pens, bags (including handbags, briefcases or laptop cases), outdoor coats or jackets, folders, files or plastic wallets. Lockers are provided for your belongings and cameras when not in use.

It is our aim to make all the archives collections accessible to everyone, however, there are some reasons why certain documents and books cannot be issued to you immediately on request:

  • Some documents may be in poor physical condition. These are usually marked NFP (not fit for production).
  • Some records contain exempt information (eg medical details)
  • A number of collections may not yet have been catalogued and indexed.

The search room is open from 10am to 4pm, Tuesday to Saturday, and calls will be transferred from the customer service centre to the search room during those hours.

Guide to physical access

The public facilities at Lincolnshire Archives are designed to be fully accessible by wheelchair users. We also have basic aids to assist anyone with hearing or sight difficulties. Staff are more than happy to assist with access to the resources.

The entrance doors to the building and search room are automatic although staff will have to release a security lock for the search room. There is a lift to other floors within the building and toilet facilities suitable for wheelchair access. The Archives also has:

  • An induction-hearing loop fitted to the reception counter
  • Magnifying aids available to use or borrow
  • Refreshment facilities
  • Guide dogs are admitted

Car parking

There is a car park to the rear of the building for visitor use, the entrance is located on Rosemary Lane. The car park is controlled by an automated barrier and an exit code will need to be obtained from the archives’ reception before you leave. The car park gates are closed soon after closing time.

There is no charge to park in this car park, however, if full there are also two public pay car parks in St Rumbold Street.

The archives staff will reply to general enquiries about the archives and library material free of charge. There is no charge to use the search room resources other than the self-service microfiche and computer printouts.

The other costs for services at the archives including reproduction costs and research services are available in full in the prices list. Prices are likely to change on 1st April every year.

Photography of most documents is allowed for on the purchase of a daily or annual permit and completion of a copyright form. Copies can be made from microfiche using the microfiche printer in the Search Room. Copies can also be ordered from the reprographics department. If you intend to copy material during your visit, a notice stating the legal obligations of the Copyright, Designs and Patent Act 1988 is on display in the Search Room. Customers who wish to reproduce copies or put copies on public display must apply in writing to the Collections Development Manager.
