Healthy Relationships

If you’re worried about your relationship, which could be for a variety of reasons, you can get support and advice that can help you.

Examples of what a health relationship vs unhealthy relationship looks like and what the warning signs are.

What are the warning signs?

The following behaviours are typical of individuals who are trying to exert power and control over a partner and could mean abuse:

  • Jealousy
  • Controlling behaviour – what you do, who you see
  • Putting you down/playing mind games
  • Checking your mobile
  • Mood swings
  • Forces sexual activity
  • Isolation
  • Accusing – you may be falsely accused of flirting or cheating without reason
  • Communicating abusively – screaming/insults/threats
  • Threats of violence or past history of violence

What should you do if you or someone you know is worried about their relationship or could be suffering from abuse?

There are several dedicated websites for young people to go to for advice and numbers you can call for support and guidance as listed below.

  • Talk to your partner
  • Talk to someone you trust
  • Contact Childline on 0800 1111 or visit their website for in-depth advice on relationship concerns. Childline host an extensive relationships message board for young people to communicate to one another for advice.
  • www.brook .org.uk  -  This site offers advice on relationships for young people under the age of 25 years. For confidential advice you can contact an advisor by text or webchat on 07717989023
  • Disrespect Nobody” website offers advice and guidance to help you if your worried about your relationship. The site features real stories from teenagers, frequently asked questions and a relationship checklist that will help you to understand whether your in what’s termed as an “unhealthy” relationship
