A17 embankment repairs

The £2.4m project to carry out large scale drainage improvements and protect the bank from further slippage and deterioration over coming years are still on track to be complete by the end of April 2018.

What we achieved in December and January

  • Cleared out vegetation ahead of digging for drainage works
  • Installed three new road crossings to the westbound carriageway
  • Replaced old kerbs with new kerb drains to channel the water away from the A17
  • Started drainage works near the Old River Slea to the outfall, where much of the water from the A17 will ultimately flow to
  • Began installing steel sheet piles to both sides of the A153 underbridge and the A17 bridge over the railway to stabilise the existing embankment
  • Completed road surfacing and laid road markings and reinstated crash barriers along westbound carriageway
  • Laid topsoil to completed areas of work

What’s happening in February and March

  • Continue installation of steel sheet piles to the A153 underbridge and A17 railway bridge
  • Link new road crossing to the eastbound carriageway
  • Repair crash barriers along eastbound carriageway
  • Re-install crash barriers to central reservation
  • Link new drainage network to existing outfalls and to the updated system completed in December and January
  • Complete drainage work south of the A17 near the River Slea and Old River Slea;
  • Re-profile existing drainage ditches to aid water channelled from the A17 get to the outfall
  • Lay road surfacing to areas where kerb drains have been installed

Current traffic restrictions and closures

  • Reduced speed limits to 30mph on A17 where works are taking place
  • Eastbound section of carriageway closed for six weeks, until mid-March, with eastbound traffic moved to a lane on the westbound carriageway

Upcoming traffic restrictions and closures

  • Single lane closures of both directions of A17 from mid-March until the end of the project
