Heritage skills workshops available this half-term at Lincoln Castle

18 October 2017

The Lincolnshire memories and memorials project is offering young people a chance to learn the traditional skills used to craft some of the most beautiful war memorials.

Heritage skills workshop - stone carving

Stonemasonary at the Heritage Skills Centre

Heritage skills have been used to produce stunning stained glass windows and carved stone monuments as well as intricately bound memorial books using the iconic poppy image.

Thanks to funding from Heritage Lottery Fund and Armed Forces Covenant young people now have the chance to enjoy the following workshops:

  • Copper Foiled Stained Glass: Monday 23rd October, 10am-4pm
Create an artistic piece of copper foiled glass. You will learn how to select, cut and shape glass, and solder with lead to create a piece to take away with you. For 16 to 25 year olds, full day attendance necessary, £5 (usual course price £95).
  • Bookbinding: Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th October, 10am-4pm
Bookbinder, Mags Bradley, will be at the Heritage Skills Centre throughout the event offering free ‘drop-in’ sessions making simple paper books. Booking not necessary, activity will take up to 20 minutes.
  • Felted Poppy Fields: Tuesday 24th October, 10am-4pm
Explore using the techniques of felting to explore poppy iconography. You’ll create wild wet felted poppy fields in the morning and have several project options in the afternoon including poppy vessels, small bags or brooches all of which you can take home. For 14 to 25 year olds, full day attendance necessary, £5 (usual course price £45).
  • Stone Carving: Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th October, 10am-4pm
Create a poppy motif in Lincolnshire limestone. You will learn to use basic stone carving tools and make a piece to take away with you. For 14 to 25 year olds, full day attendance necessary, £5 (usual course price £85).

Memories and Memorials Project Officer at Lincolnshire County Council, Cathryn Pike, said: “Almost every town and village has a war memorial in remembrance of those who laid down their lives for their country.

“The workshops give young people a wonderful opportunity to get creative and learn new skills whilst highlighting the importance of remembrance.”
