Lincoln Eastern Bypass update – Rail bridge works, utility diversions and archaeological investigations

The Lincoln to Spalding rail bridge is nearly ready to slide into place, meanwhile works near Wragby Road roundabout progress towards connecting north to south along the eastside of the city.

What we achieved last month

  • Completed archaeological investigations at several priority areas north of the River Witham
  • Bridge beams, including two 107-tonne beams, delivered to site and assembled
  • Started assembly of the Lincoln to Spalding rail line underbridge
  • Removal of the cofferdam, which allows construction below the  waterline
  • Completed the construction of site access off of Wragby Road Roundabout and the north and south sides of Hawthorn Road
  • Continued piling works for Market Rasen rail bridge
  • Completed gas diversions on Bloxholm Lane as BT, Virgin Media & Anglian Water continued their diversions
  • Continued work on setting up main offices and compound at Washingborough Road
  • Carried out alterations of the temporary stone ramps to platforms for use in sliding the bridge into position
  • Carried out remedial works to main rail lines
  • Pre cast concrete embankment retaining wall units delivered for use with new bridge

What’s happening this month

  • Continue archaeological investigations north of the River Witham and on the remaining areas along both sides of Washingborough Road, along with commencing investigations north of Greetwell Road
  • Placement of the new rail bridge into its final resting place during a 72-hour Network Rail closure
  • Removal of the old bridge and replacing the rail track
  • Excavation of the embankment where the bridge sits
  • Continue setting up Washingborough Road compound and carrying out utility diversions
  • Begin temporary works around the River Witham and night works at Wragby Road roundabout
  • Begin construction of northern support structure and continue piling works for Market Rasen rail bridge
  • Begin work on a Wragby Road culvert and the associated drainage works

Current traffic restrictions and closures

  • Temporary 30mph limit on Washingborough Road for the duration of the works

Upcoming traffic restrictions and closures

  • Lane closure on Greetwell Road during week commencing 11th October
  • Night-time lane closures on Wragby Road from 11th October to late January (not during Christmas holidays); traffic management will include multi-way traffic lights and road users should expect delays
