Lincoln High Street Improvements update: Installation of natural stone paving and new seating

28 September 2017

Construction work is well underway for the project, and the site team is making steady progress towards a November completion for the scheme.

The county council's improvement scheme for the area of Lincoln High Street between Tentercroft Street and St Mary’s Street, has reached its midway point. Paving is now underway and the project is set to be complete by this year's Christmas Market.

When complete, the scheme will see the recently-pedestrianised area of Lincoln’s High Street, between Tentercroft Street and St Mary’s Street, paved in natural stone with new seating and signage installed.

What we’ve achieved so far

  • A site compound has been set up on the nearby East West Link Road, where the project team meet regularly to discuss the scheme’s progress
  • A majority of the existing carriageway has been excavated
  • Drainage works on the western side of the site have been completed
  • Large sections of the tarmac foundation have been laid ahead of the new paving setts being laid
  • The first section of kerbing has been laid on the western side of the High Street
  • Network Rail has started their refurbishment of the level crossing

What’s happening in October

  • Complete drainage works on the eastern side of the High Street
  • Lay the new kerb on the eastern side
  • Lay new paving setts
  • Excavate the existing footway on the western side in preparation for the new paving slabs
  • Installation of ducting for new signage

Current traffic restrictions and closures

  • Delivery traffic is only allowed before 10am and after 4pm (see below for exclusions)

Upcoming traffic restrictions and closures

  • Night-time road closures are planned for the following Saturdays – 7 October, 21 October and 4 November – as Network Rail undertakes level crossing refurbishment works. Pedestrian access will be maintained during these closures via the Network Rail footbridge lift or supervised access over the level crossing.
  • Network Rail will be closing the steps of the level crossing pedestrian footbridge from Sunday 1 October until the end of November 2017 to undertake essential improvement works to their footbridge steps. These works will be carried out under a series of night-time road closures, from 11pm to 6am, between Saturday 21 October and Saturday 11 November 2017. Network Rail will be providing their own traffic management to manage these road closures. Network Rail approached the county council in August, and as a result, the council has taken the decision to accommodate these works in order to avoid further impact to the public and traders at a later date.
