Peppermint Junction improvement works come to an end three months early

12 December 2017

The new junction is ready!

The new three-arm roundabout at the A17/A151 junction is now officially open, making access to the A17 safer, easier and faster than the previous T-junction.

The new three-arm roundabout at the A17/A151 junction is now officially open, three months early and on budget, making access to the A17 safer, easier and faster than the previous T-junction.

In addition to improvements to the A17/A151 junction, the £5.4m improvement scheme also included construction of a second roundabout that provides access to housing and commercial development land for the proposed South Lincolnshire Food Enterprise Zone, as well as for the proposed Holbeach West housing development.

Cllr Richard Davies, Executive Member for Highways, said: “This is great news for Holbeach and will make travelling the A17 much safer for people.

“The updated junction will not only reduce the risk of collision, but it will also alleviate congestion in the town centre by making access to the A17 safer, easier and faster than before.”

Cllr Colin Davie, Executive Member for Economic Development, said: “These improvements will encourage housing growth, while supporting employment opportunities and the local economy, by providing safe, convenient access to up to 650 new homes to the east of the A151 and up to 20 hectares of employment land west of the A151.

“The food sector, particularly agri-food and food manufacturing, are of enormous importance to Greater Lincolnshire - it’s our third biggest sector and contributes £2.5 billion every year to the area’s economy. By developing land for the South Lincolnshire FEZ, we want to support existing businesses, while also attracting those interested in investing and relocating to the county.”

Peppermint Junction opening

Cllr Nick Worth, South Holland District Council portfolio holder for Growth and Commercialisation, added: “After many years of lobbying, I am absolutely delighted this scheme has finally been completed. It will make it much safer for road users accessing the A17 from the A151, much improved access onto it for heavy goods vehicles and will reduce traffic, especially HGVs in Holbeach town centre.

“Additionally, it will open up access to Peppermint Park on one side for new employment and research opportunities and housing on the other side. It will also bring much needed investment for further infrastructure in the town. A wonderful Christmas present for Holbeach.”

Halina Davies, LEP Programme Manager, said: “The Greater Lincolnshire LEP’s £2.1m of Growth Deal support for this strategically vital infrastructure scheme off the A17 has delivered a gateway into the designated South Lincolnshire Food Enterprise Zone, aiding future housing development and enabling provision of high-quality commercial space for our manufacturing and agri-food sectors.

“Not only will the Food Enterprise Zone provide employment opportunities, it will also create a bespoke environment for research, training and knowledge transfer.”

Work on the new road started at the beginning of May 2017 and has been carried out by Eurovia Contracting North.
