Preparatory works planned ahead of Grantham Southern Relief Road phase two construction

10 March 2017

Construction firm Galliford Try is set to carry out pre-contract works including hedge clearance and other preliminary tasks before contractors break ground on the second phase of the scheme this summer.

Hand tools will be used to preserve the natural habitat

Works along the A1, where the new Spitalgate Junction is proposed, will start on Monday 13th March, lasting until the end of April (subject to reasonable weather conditions). The works will include crews clearing hedges along the embankments to make way for the start of construction in July.

Due to the potential of hibernating wildlife in the area, hedge clearance will be undertaken in accordance with Natural England requirements, meaning the work will be carried out using manual hand tools so as not to disturb the animals’ natural habitat.

As part of the pre-emptive works, overnight lane closures and speed restrictions will be enforced on the A1; however, traffic flow will be maintained at all times. As part of the closures, a team will also be conducting Ground Penetration Radar surveys, checking for unknown cables and pipes where work will be carried out once primary construction begins.

Cllr Richard Davies, Executive Member for Highways and Transport, said:

“On-site work for phase two of the relief road is set to begin ahead of construction officially starting this summer, which is great news for Grantham and people travelling in and around it.

“In the interest of public and worker safety, some lane closures on the A1 will be necessary while these works are carried. We ask for your patience, as these works are essential to clearing the way so that we can start phase two construction this July as planned.  We’ll do our absolute best to minimise any disruptions, while also taking great care to maintain the natural habitat of any wildlife living in the area.”

Galliford Try has been appointed to carry out the necessary preparatory works ahead of phase two. They have also been identified as the preferred contractor for phase two construction works and will be officially appointed once necessary permissions from Highways England have been gained for the next stage of works, which will join the B1174 to the A1.
