Storm Doris: Weather warning for strong winds issued across Lincolnshire

Storm Doris is coming - be prepared

Residents in Lincolnshire can expect some very strong winds, now titled storm Doris, on Thursday 23rd February after the Met Office issued an amber warning for the region.

Amber warning has been issued across Lincolnshire for Thursday.

- Update for 22.02.2017: Whilst the Met Office is still issuing an amber warning for the region, the speeds of the gusts have been lowered to 60 to 70 mph. We remind residents that they must still remain vigilant, and follow the tips below.

According to the Chief Forecaster’s Assessment:

“Some very strong winds are expected throughout Thursday in association with storm ‘Doris’, with a short period where gusts of 70 to 80 mph are possible.

“Whilst the strongest winds look to be only short-lived, damage to structures, interruptions to power supplies and widespread disruption to travel networks are likely, with a danger of injury from flying debris.

“Heavy rain is also likely through Thursday as well as some snow over high ground as the system clears eastwards. These may prove additional hazards.”

There are many ways you can keep safe during strong winds by being prepared. Tips include:

  • Secure items outside your home that could be blown away, such as patio furniture, bins etc
  • Place cars in garages or where they will be protected from flying debris, such as tiles or branches for example
  • Remove items from around your home that may be blown into windows/patio doors
  • Keep pets indoors. Shelter outdoor pets, or bring under cover in a protected location
  • Check that nearby trees and/or tall structures are undamaged and in good repair and are not in danger of being blown over and damaging your home or placing people in danger
