Council Services:

Grief, Loss and Bereavement

Educational Psychologists have a key role in supporting schools, children and young people across a wide range of needs. When people are experiencing grief and loss we work to support those involved in order to promote the emotional health and wellbeing of children, young people and members of school staff.

Most grieving children, young people and adults do not need a ‘bereavement expert’, they need people who care. The role of the Educational Psychology Team is to offer support and guidance to Head teachers and senior managers around how best they can meet the needs of the children and young people in their care. We also offer guidance on how to support the staff within school, including recognising and managing their own emotional needs as well as how they can meet the needs of their pupils. Depending on the situation, this may include opportunities for adults, either individually or in small groups, to share their feelings and experiences.

As part of this work the Educational Psychology Team has developed a set of materials to inform and support individuals through difficult life events including grief, loss and bereavement. Some of these materials are particularly relevant for the school community, but we hope that some will be equally helpful to parents and carers.
The following materials are available as downloads:

A Support Pack for Schools

This pack provides clear guidance which schools might find helpful about coping with grief and loss. It provides information on how best to support children and young people as well as how to ensure the adults working in school are also supported.
