How Educational Psychologists Work

The role of the Educational Psychologist is to contribute to the learning and development of children and young people. This is achieved through the practical application of psychology.

Three processes underpin the way in which educational psychologists work in Lincolnshire.

  1. Working in consultation with parents and other agencies
    Consultation is a joint problem solving process. Educational psychologists work with those involved in meeting the educational needs of children.
  2. Working within a cycle of plan, do and review
    This cycle allows us to regularly review and evaluate any agreed actions. The cycle supports all aspects of our service delivery. For example, work with individual pupils, school development and project work
  3. Working from an interactionist perspective
    When exploring a problem, we try to look at all the factors and how they might be interacting to create the concern.

If a pupil is experiencing learning difficulties, a number of factors would be considered, including:

  • the needs of the pupil;
  • classroom environment;
  • teaching approaches and style;
  • how the curriculum is being presented; and
  • how the curriculum matches the needs of the pupil.

We may use a range of approaches to help the pupil become a more effective learner and to explore different teaching strategies. These approaches may include Dynamic Assessment.

Working Towards Solutions

We use an interactionist approach when examining concerns about the progress of:

  • a whole class;
  • a group of pupils; or
  • an individual child.

The concerns may relate to a range of aspects of child development:

  • learning
  • behaviour
  • emotional development
  • social relationships
  • language development
  • physical co-ordination.

We look at each child’s development within a dynamic educational context. This shows us how the individual child interacts with adults and the environment.

A ‘problem’ does not exist in isolation; it is the result of the interaction of several factors.

An interactionist perspective explores the influences of various factors. This allows us to identify effective problem solving strategies.

We gather information about each dimension of the learning triangle i.e. child, curriculum, environment.

This will involve discussion of the interventions already used by the educational setting at earlier stages.
