Sixth Form

To qualify for transport to a Sixth Form the student must attend the designated transport area (DTA) sixth form and the distance between the home address and the school must be more than 4827 metres (3 miles). In most cases the DTA sixth form will be the nearest to the home address. If you think that another sixth form is nearer to your address check with us – we will agree transport if the other sixth form is nearer than the designated as long as it is over three miles from your address.

A contribution towards the cost must be made – For the academic year 2016/17 this is £500 or three termly instalments of £170 or six payments of £85 - A total cost of £510. For the academic year 2017/18 this is £570 or three termly instalments of £193 or six payments of £96.50 - A total of £579. The contribution is reviewed annually.

Students must be under the age of 19 on 1 September prior to the start of the course.

College

To qualify for transport to a college the student must attend the designated transport area (DTA) college and the distance between the home address and the school must be more than 4827 metres (3 miles). Raising of the participation age (RPA)

The Government has increased the age to which all young people in England must continue in education or training, requiring them to continue until the end of the academic year in which they turn 18.

Raising the participation age (RPA) does not mean young people must stay in school. They will be able to choose one of the following options post 16:

  • Full-time education, such as school, college or home education
  • An apprenticeship
  • Part-time education or training if they are employed, self-employed or volunteering full-time (which is defined as 20 hours or more a week)

These changes do not affect any entitlement to transport support under the County Council’s policy. All post 16 students will still be required to pay the contribution as the government has not made changes to the statutory obligation for the provision of home to school / college transport.
