Parents and Carers

Education takes place in a school but learning is a lifelong activity. When your young person comes home from school/college they need to come into a learning household.

Learning Households

What makes a good learning household beneficial for children and young people?

  • Together - everyone in household is learning, eg reading together or independently, studying or on a course. Ideas: Ask them to show you how to use the internet, use the football results or a trip to the shops to discuss numbers and words. Talk about what is in the papers or on the TV or radio.
  • Communication - speak and listen to each other. Find out about their day. What happened? Share everyday activities. Ask them what they know and chat about their views. Help them to develop their ideas. Further information and advice can be found on the Communication Trust website
  • Concentration - valuing the need to focus, to not be distracted. Supporting your child or young person to know how they can study and work best.
  • Organisation - provide a space to learn, having some routines and being prepared. Regularly check the school diary or reading bag, help them with their homework. Have they got the right equipment and books before going to school? Check that their homework is done. Involve them in planning a family event, journey or holiday.

Reading is important

Tips for supporting the enjoyment of books:

  • Encourage your child to pretend to ‘read’ a book before he or she can read words.
  • Visit the library as often as possible - take out CDs and DVDs as well as books.
  • Schedule a regular time for reading - perhaps when you get home from school or just before bed.
  • Buy dual-language books if English isn’t your family’s first language - you can talk about books and stories, and develop a love for them, in any language
  • Look for books on topics that you know your child is interested in - maybe dragons, insects, cookery or a certain sport.

Make sure that children’s books are easily accessible in different rooms around your house.

The Letterbox club

The Lincolnshire Virtual school has subscribed to The Letterbox Club, a programme managed by Booktrust that was initiated at the University of Leicester, which aims to provide enjoyable educational support for looked-after children aged 5-13 (years 1, 3, 5 and 7). Children receive a variety of books, number games and stationery items to use and keep for themselves, including:

  • Story books by authors such as Roald Dahl, Malorie Blackman and Michael Rosen.
  • Non-fiction books looking at a wide range of subjects.
  • Some simple number games (these may need the help of the foster carer or an older child to set up).
  • Stationery items, to encourage writing and drawing; please note this there will be a pair of scissors in the first parcel.

The parcels are sent once every month for six months. We hope that your foster child enjoys being part of The Letterbox Club.

Books for caring

A selection of books specifically for Looked after children, most of the books are available in local libraries. Should you have difficulty in locating a copy, the ISBN number is given alongside the title in order that one can be ordered.

The list of books have not all been read by the Virtual School and must be read based on individual needs.

The National Curriculum for maintained English Primary Schools

For generations, carers/parents have found themselves visiting primary schools with their children only to hear themselves saying, “It’s not like when I was at school”. Things change quickly in education, and at no time in the past 25 years has that been truer than September when the whole school curriculum changed for maintained schools throughout England.

Schools have a new curriculum to follow, they no longer refer to National Curriculum levels or have SATs at the end of year 6.  When you go into school to discuss your primary age children’s education you need to go with a new knowledge base. Further information can be found here

Moving on from school

All young people should be given the opportunity to reach their individual potential.  Talking about careers isn’t an activity solely for when they reach keystage 4 but at this time they may need extra support from you (careers advice for parents), their school, or specialist careers guidance (teeninfolincs). 

We want to be aspirational and encourage young people to see themselves as potential university graduates. There are strong links to our local universities and further information on resources and events for care leavers, looked after children and the adults around them is available from The National Network for the Education of Care Leavers.


If your young person needs other information or support on careers, health, things to do or having their voice heard you can direct them to teeninfolincs.

(Some information on teeninfolincs is not suitable for young people aged under 13.)

Support for Post Looked After Children

East Midlands Adoption Support Service (EMASS) provides specialist support and advice for adoptive families; families caring for children and young people under Special Guardianship (SGOs);teachers and school staff, children and young people. Further information on training, targeted support and useful links can be found on their website.

Private fostering

A private fostering arrangement occurs when a child under 16 (or 18 if the child is disabled) is cared for and lives with an adult who is not a relative for 28 days or more. A private fostering arrangement does not sit with the Virtual School.

After Adoption

Promoting the Education of Adopted Children. SafeBase for Schools is based on After Adoption’s successful SafeBase Therapeutic Parenting Programme for adopted families. It aims to help schools effectively support young adopted pupils to reach their potential.
