The handbook is a guide for voluntary and community groups, including how to set up a group and apply for funding.

What is the Really Useful Stuff Handbook?

The Really Useful Stuff Handbook is a user friendly guide that provides useful information for voluntary and community groups from, for example, creating a constitution to applying for funding.

The Handbook consists of useful chapters such as:

Setting up your group - useful information for anyone wishing to form a voluntary or community group including a step by step guide; options for your group’s legal structure; how to write a set of rules for your group, and how to plan and resource your group’s activities.

Running you group - useful information on key responsibilities of your group’s management committee (including keeping within the law); policies and procedures; roles and responsibilities of individual management committee members; a step by step guide on recruiting and retaining committee members; options for dealing with issues concerning committee members, and how to run effective meetings.

Funding your group – useful information on preparing your project; a step by step guide on searching for funding and applying for grants.

Equality and Diversity - useful information on what you need to know in order to comply with the law to enable you to positively benefit from engaging with diverse communities and help make your group or service accessible to others.

How to use the Really Useful Stuff handbook

The handbook includes:

  • Self assessment tools to help you identify what information you need
  • Practical guidance and examples which reflect real community experiences
  • Action Points to help you identify what you need to do
  • Signposts to other sources of support and advice
  • Jargon Buster explaining common terms at the beginning of each section
