Lincolnshire Good Citizens Awards 2013

Lincolnshire County Council’s Good Citizens Awards presented at the Lincolnshire Show

The winners of the Good Citizens Awards for 2013 were presented with their awards at the Lincolnshire Show, by Chairman of the county council, Cllr Ray Wootten, with his wife, Cllr Linda Wootten.

Young Citizen of the Year

Darrell Cosby, aged 16 scooped the Young Citizen Award for his work helping children on Lincoln’s Ermine estate to get involved in sports. Darrell joined a local sports and arts project, Positive Futures three years ago, and since then has completed a sports leaders’ course and became a Positive Futures volunteer himself.

He has now set up his own weekly multi-sports club for youngsters aged eight to 12 on the Ermine estate.

Darrell said, “I am honoured I have won this award, and very surprised because I’m just doing something I enjoy. I would like to thank Stephen and Positive Futures for all the support, guidance and opportunities that have made this possible.”

Citizen of the Year

Betty Summersby has won the Citizen of the Year Award for her tireless work in her local village of Oasby. Betty carries out many voluntary activities, including taking people to the doctors and hospital, picking up prescriptions, collecting school children from school transport and serving on many local committees. She is also a great supporter of her local church.  

On receiving the award Betty said, “I truly enjoy everything I do to help this community, where I have lived all my life.”

Community Group of the Year

Taking the honours for the Community Group is the Crowland Cancer Fund, set up by Frank Barrett who received life-saving cancer treatment 24 years ago. The fund’s supporters have since raised more than £500,000 for cancer-related charities and other good causes, through car boot sales, garden fetes, and more  recently they opened a charity shop in East Street.

Frank thanked the charity’s supporters, saying, “Local people have been very generous both with donations and their time. I feel surprised and honoured that we have received this Good Citizens Award.”
