Lincolnshire Coastal Study

What is the Lincolnshire Coastal Study?

Lincolnshire's coastline boasts some of the country's most versatile agricultural land, a successful tourism industry and internationally-renowned nature conservation sites and its residents can feel justly proud.  Unfortunately, with large areas at or below sea level, this is not immune from the impacts of climate change, like rises in sea level and more frequent storms.

The government has asked for more research about the implications for sustainable development in the face of sea level rises, as a consequence of climate change.  A study was commissioned to look at these matters.  Work was undertaken between January 2009 and March 2010 under the guidance of the Lincolnshire Coastal Study Steering Group, this group consists of:-

  • Lincolnshire County Council
  • The three coastal local authorities (East Lindsey District Council, Boston Borough Council and South Holland District Council
  • Government Office for the East Midlands (GOEM)
  • East Midlands Development Agency (emda)
  • Environment Agency
  • Natural England
  • East Midlands Regional Assembly (EMRA) (now East Midlands Councils)
  • Internal Drainage Boards

The study was completed in March 2010 and considers a number of options looking forward 20, 50 and 100 years about how sustainable communities might be developed.  These options have been examined against a number of core principles and the flood hazard maps which form the central evidence base of the study.  The study will inform the preparation of land use policies in the area, and provide a tool to evaluate proposed developments.  In taking forward the principles of the study a Coastal Pathfinder Project is looking at various aspects of the implications of coastal flooding.

Residents were invited to come along and find out more in June 2009 at libraries within the Lincolnshire Coastal Study area including: Skegness, Spalding, Boston, Louth ,Long Sutton and Mablethorpe.
