Road safety is an important life skill that helps children travel safely and confidently. We offer a range of age-appropriate sessions for primary schools, designed to develop road safety knowledge and skills as pupils become more independent.
Year 1 – Walk Safe
Format: Indoor session (with optional outdoor activity)
A fun and interactive introduction to road safety through classroom and playground activities. Pupils learn the basic skills needed to begin understanding how to stay safe near roads.
Duration: 45 minutes (up to 1 hour with the optional outdoor activity)
Year 2 – Pedestrian Training
Format: Outdoor, presenter-led
A practical introduction to pedestrian safety using suitable, risk-assessed routes close to the school. Pupils develop essential road safety skills in a real-world environment.
Duration: 45 minutes
Year 3 – In-Car Safety
Format: Teacher-led resource
This classroom session focuses on staying safe when travelling by car. Pupils learn about wearing seatbelts, child car seat and booster seat requirements, and how to behave safely as passengers.
Duration: 45 minutes
Year 4 – Road Safety Trail
Format: Outdoor, presenter-led
Building on the skills introduced in Year 2, this practical session helps pupils develop the confidence and awareness needed as they begin making more independent journeys.
Duration: 45 minutes
Year 4 – Road Safety Superheroes
Format: Indoor, presenter-led
An engaging classroom-based alternative to the Road Safety Trail. Through interactive activities, pupils develop their understanding of safer road behaviours, hazard awareness and decision-making.
Duration: 45 minutes
Year 5 – Cycle Helmets
Format: Presenter-led
A practical workshop demonstrating why wearing a cycle helmet is important when cycling or scooting. Pupils explore how helmets help reduce the risk of serious head injuries and why wearing one should be part of every journey.
Duration: 45 minutes
Year 6 – Stepping Up
Format: Presenter-led with pupil project
An interactive session designed to help pupils prepare for the transition to secondary school. It encourages discussion about planning journeys, recognising hazards and travelling safely and independently.
Duration: Approximately 1 hour
Years 5 and 6 – Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO)
Format: Teacher and pupil-led
A year-round peer education programme that empowers pupils to promote road safety across their school through campaigns, activities and awareness projects.
Duration: Ongoing
Before your session
For all presenter-led sessions, schools will need to provide:
- access to a large screen and Microsoft PowerPoint
- appropriate risk assessments for any activities taking place off-site
- suitable staff-to-pupil ratios for off-site sessions
