If you think a new School Crossing Patrol is needed at a location, a request can be submitted by the local school or a local county councillor.
Each request is assessed against established criteria to determine whether a patrol is needed and would improve safety for pedestrians.
The assessment considers:
- the number of school-age children and other pedestrians using the proposed crossing point
- the number of vehicles travelling through the area within 50 metres of the proposed location
- traffic and pedestrian activity during the busiest periods at the start and end of the school day
- the road layout, visibility and any existing crossing facilities
- police collision and incident data
- the level of risk and difficulty pedestrians experience when crossing
The assessment helps ensure School Crossing Patrols are located where they can provide the greatest safety benefit. If a location does not meet the criteria for a patrol, other road safety measures may be considered where appropriate.
