Grantham Transport Strategy

In recognition of the importance of the role of transport in supporting corporate initiatives at a local and regional level, the County Council and its partner (South Kesteven District Council) commissioned a multi-modal transportation study for Grantham.

The conclusion of the study, endorsed by the County Council in December 2007 and South Kesteven District Council in April 2009,  has proposed an integrated transport strategy, known as "The Transport Strategy for Grantham 2007 to 2021 and Beyond" which is available to view in the Downloads section on this page. The strategy will be an important policy that will be used to inform other key transport documents, such as the Local Transport Plan (LTP).

The Grantham Transport Study was carried out to determine how transport problems in the Grantham area could be tackled. The aim is to make the town and its surroundings a more attractive place in which to live, work and visit.

The development of the strategy has involved extensive public and stakeholder consultation and recognises the need for investment in transport infrastructure to support the continued growth of Grantham with particular emphasis on housing, economic growth, tourism, social inclusion and environmental enhancement. The strategy has been developed to conform with the Shared Priorities agreed between the Local Government Association and Central Government and will also help inform the development of the emerging Local Development Framework currently being produced by the District Council.

Lincolnshire County Council is now in the process of delivering the strategy's short term aims including:

  • improve local public transport services
  • town centre traffic management
  • walking and cycling review and improvements
  • Signing review and improvements
  • Streetscene improvements
  • Bridge protection systems

The strategy also identifies some longer term improvements including enabling a transparent means of securing developer contributions through legal agreements as part of planning permissions, which will enable the County Council to provide a Relief Road and balanced integrated transport improvements rather than piecemeal interventions.
