Council Services:

Car Parking Standards

Following the publication of the National Planning Policy Framework, there is no longer a need for local authorities to set maximum car parking standards. Accordingly, the Council has ceased using the previously adopted maximum standards in its role as local highway authority.

Instead, proposals are being dealt with on a case-by-case basis with the main issue being the provision of sufficient off-street parking to avoid the over-spill of parked vehicles onto the highway to the detriment of road safety and capacity.

In due course, new standards are expected to be included in the new Local Plans currently being prepared by the local planning authorities across the County. In the meantime, developers (or their consultants) should contact the Highway Authority to discuss this further if there are any concerns.
