Cameras Mounted to Traffic Light Stamford

Request

On the 20th August 2026 I noticed a camera mounted to each traffic light at the St Paul's Street/ East Street/ Brazenose Lane junction in Stamford [Latitude: 52.654275, Longitude: -0.472894]. There is also a further module mounted to a lamppost approximately 20m away on the east side of St Paul's Street. Please provide the following information...

1) What are the devices?

2) What information are they observing/recording?

3) How will any captured information be used?

4) What is the storage/ retention policy of any information captured?

5) Is this a permanent installation or temporary?

Decision

1. The devices are IP cameras on the signal poles and the boxes on the lamp columns are access points for the wireless detection of vehicles.

2. The cameras allow us to monitor traffic at the junction; these are live stream only and do not record. The access points are used to transmit vehicle detection data from traffic sensors to the signal controller to register the traffic demands.

3. No information is captured from any of these devices.

4. There is no storage or retention of any images or video or traffic data.

5. They are currently a permanent installation.
