Decision

1. The number of pothole enquiries received in the last three calendar years (January to December) are as follows:

Calander Year Number of Pothole Enquiries Recieved
2024 (Jan-Dec) 17,390
2025 (Jan-Dec) 12,455
2026 (Jan-Aug) 18,193

Pothole enquiries are primarily generated through reports from members of the public, either via FixMyStreet or through our Customer Service Centre.

Other potholes that are identified during routine and safety highway inspections are raised as defects, rather than enquiries.

For context, the number of pothole jobs completed in the same timeframe are as follows:

Calander Year Number of Pothole Jobs Completed
2024 (Jan-Dec) 34,601
2025 (Jan-Dec) 27,370
2026 (Jan-Aug) 28,586

Please note that the number of pothole jobs completed above relates specifically to pothole jobs raised. However, this does not include additional potholes that may have been repaired through other works carried out by LCC on the carriageways during each year, such as carriageway resurfacing, carriageway patching and other carriageway minor works.

2. LCC does not record the cost of individual pothole repairs. We follow a risk-based approach, as set out in our Highways Infrastructure Asset Management Plan, which requires pothole repairs to be carried out at differing response times depending on the level of risk to the public. Each of these repair times has a separate price and the number of repairs in each category can vary greatly. It is not possible to give exact expenditure as LCC operates a complete reactive service and costs are not separated into carriageway pothole repairs only. The Highways Infrastructure Asset Management Plan can be found here: Highways infrastructure asset management plan 2026. Transparency Report - Technical Annex 2026-27
