Decision

The terms of appointment for the senior coroner.

1. Coroner appointments are outlined in the Chief Coroners Guidance No 6. Guidance No 6 The Coroner Appointment Process Revised April 2026

2. Coroners, like all judicial office holders, are independent in their decision-making. As a result, the local authority has no authority to review, investigate, comment on, or intervene in the judicial decisions of individual coroners, nor in the management of individual cases.

3. As with all judges, matters concerning personal conduct fall within the remit of the Judicial Conduct Investigations Office (JCIO).

Information about the complaints process and how to make a complaint is available via the JCIO website https://www.complaints.judicialconduct.gov.uk/

Independent judicial decision making may be subject to review by a senior court on successful application for Judicial Review.
