Understanding the reality of sexual relationships - Stay Safe Partnership

Outcomes

This Workshop mainly looks at challenging the perceptions portrayed in pornography. This has been developed following requests by some local schools and following the changes to the RSE Government Guidelines. These state that ‘Some pupils are also exposed to harmful behaviours online, and via other forms of media, which may normalise violent sexual behaviours. A focus on healthy relationships and broader relationships education can help young people understand acceptable behaviours in relationships’ (Department for Education, 2019).

In today's society pornography is more easily accessible for young people than ever before. Whether, this is intentional or accidental it can influence how they view their own relationships, often in a negative way.

Firstly, we discuss how pornography has become a much more widely available and if this is a good or bad thing. Followed by clarification regarding the laws surrounding this topic, we look at the myths versus reality and how this can impact on the way young people perceive sexual relationships. We spend much of the session expanding the students knowledge around consent, contraception, and other areas that do not feature in pornography.

We will cover how pornography might be used in the young LGBT community, and how women are often perceived. If this is right or wrong? Finally, we consider the impact on our body image and how to stay positive about this.
