Wild Animal Road Warning Signs - Find a freedom of information request

Request

1. I'd like to know if your council has a location (e.g. grid reference), road number and installation date for road warning signs that include "Wild Animals" (i.e.deer), "Wildfowl" and "Migratory Toad crossing" ( and any other signage relating to wild animals i.e. Otters).

Additionally if possible, i would like information on the installation date and location (e.g. grid reference) of any wildlife mitigation for roads, including any green bridges, tunnels, pipes, ledges, wildlife fencing/barriers.

Decision

1. We do not hold a signs database and therefore we are unable to supply the requested information.

There are two bridges where we have put in ledges or by-pass tunnels specifically for wildlife.
Wath Bridge (Bridge No 12/02/64), Dyke. OSGR 510649,322441. Rebuilt in 2003 with otter ledges cast against both sides (of the box culvert units) – I am unsure if these are used or not.

Dalderby Bridge (Bridge No 26/57/90), Haltham. OSGR 525939,367085. Rebuilt in 2008 with mammal pass pipes through the bank on both sides of the bridge (box culvert) – these did not appear to have been used when last I visited the site.

Tracks and otter spraint, which we often find during bridge inspections, indicate that there are many other bridges where;

  • the form of construction has ledges which are used by otters,
  • which have flood arches and side spans that are dry in all except flood situations, used by otters
  • where water under normal circumstances is low enough to allow otter passage along banks between side of construction and edge of water.

Please be advised that Highways England are responsible for Trunk Roads, specifically the A46 in Lincolnshire between Newark and Lincoln who have has several badger underpasses.
