Maintenance of Roads and Drainage - Whaplode - Find a freedom of information request

Request

Due to the lack of maintenance by the highways department, the amount of leaves, mud, and weeds growing out of the drains and along the curbs of the roads is appalling, causing flooding and damage to the road. It seems if we are very lucky we might get a sweeper and drains cleared once a year.

When l visit Spalding l see workmen cleaning paths, roads, and communal areas, constantly sweeping leaves, cleaning the curbs.

1. I am interested in the yearly maintenance of the main roads used around the centre of Whaplode. With the current flooding l assume highways came along and put out road signs informing residents of flooding on the roads caused by poor drainage.

2. I am interested in the dates when the drains were maintained removing weed growth, checking for obstruction in the drains, sweeping the leaves, weeds and mud from the gullies. I have lived in Whaplode for 22 years and can only recall a sweeper cleaning the roads and general road, path maintenance a handful of times.

Decision

1. 'As an emergency issue, we only respond where there is flooding over half of the carriageway in order to warn the public there is an obstruction'

2.The drainage assets in Whaplode were last cleaned in late January 2020. All gully's, offlets and catchpits within the highway are currently cleaned annually as part of our routine maintenance programme.

This cleaning includes the removal of weeds from the gully grates and offlet mouths. The next clean was due for completion by the end of this week but has been delayed due to the personnel having to assist with flooding incidents but it will be completed before the end of February 2021 weather permitting. Sweeping to remove mud and leaves is the responsibility of the District Council (South Holland) as they are responsible for street cleaning.
