Schools Using the 11+ Entry Test - Find a freedom of information request

Request

Under the Freedom of Information Act I would like to request the following information for your local authority area:

1. The total number of selective state schools which use the 11 plus / transfer test to determine entry.

2. The extent of the selective system, expressed as a percentage, amongst all secondary schools. My request for a percentage relates to schools and not school places.

3. Recent statistics (numbers and percentages) regarding the numbers of children who pass the test and are educated at a private school.

4. Recent statistics (numbers and percentages) regarding the numbers of children who pass the test and who qualify for free school meals.

5. Recent statistics (numbers and percentages) regarding the numbers of children who pass the test and who have received private tuition/ coaching.

6. Copies of your authority's rules and guidance including to schools, exam boards, or parents regarding (1) private tuition/ coaching for the test and (2) how private tuition/ coaching for the test should be treated in the appeals system

Decision

1. The total number of selective state schools which use the 11 plus / transfer test to determine entry is 14 schools. One of those is only partial selection.

2. There are 54 schools, 14 of which select by ability. One only selects 10%. 25.9% of schools select by ability. This does not include those that have an aspect of selection by aptitude.
