Obesity letters sent regarding children - Find a freedom of information request

Request

I would like to know, for the following years, how many so-called 'obesity letters' are sent out and crucially what percentage of school children in your region that is. If they are for different ages (e.g year three and year six) please clarify that too.

If they are sent out multiple times a year please provide information for all periods.

Decision

LCC are unable to provide an accurate figure as a percentage of all school pupils in Lincolnshire, but can provide an accurate figure based on pupils in schools included in the NCMP child measurement program, which is the vast majority of primary schools in Lincolnshire, but which excludes special educational needs schools and some private schools.

Figures for the percentages of pupils in Reception and Year 6 in schools involved in the NCMP program in Lincolnshire who receive letters in the ‘very overweight’ and ‘overweight’ categories can be gained through publicly available information via the link below.

We attempt to send a letter to the parents or guardians of all the children measured in the NCMP program, therefore the percentages of children who are overweight or very overweight in the published figures should also be reflective of the percentage of letters sent for the different weight categories.

Data on the NCMP results for Lincolnshire, along with other local authorities, for the most recent 2021/22 academic year and all of the academic years in the request (apart from 2022/23 as measurements are currently in progress) is available publicly here: https://digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/publications/statistical/national-child-measurement-programme

Please be aware that the ‘Living with Obesity’ column on the most recent published data includes the ‘Living With Severe Obesity’ number in its figure. It should also be noted that the 2019/20 measurement year was cut short due to Covid-19, so the data was incomplete for that year and may not give an entirely accurate reflection the proportions of letters sent if the measurement process had been completed.

Likewise, measurements were also cancelled in Lincolnshire in the 2020/21 year due to issues with Covid-19, so there will not be data available for that year.
