Respectful communication for year 4 - Stay Safe Partnership

Outcomes

This workshop will cover key aspects of the key stage 2 currciulum (Statutory Guidance for: Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education) such as:

54. The focus in primary school should be on teaching the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships, with particular reference to friendships, family relationships, and relationships with other children and with adults.

55. This starts with pupils being taught about what a relationship is, what friendship is, what family means and who the people are who can support them. From the beginning of primary school, building on early education, pupils should be taught how to take turns, how to treat each other with kindness, consideration, and respect.

56. Respect for others should be taught in an age-appropriate way, in terms of understanding one’s own and others’ boundaries in play, in negotiations about space, toys, books, resources and so on.

57. Drawing attention to these (Relationships) in a range of contexts should enable pupils to form a strong early understanding of the features of relationships that are likely to lead to happiness and security. This will also help them to recognise any less positive relationships when they encounter them.

Service Description

This free workshop is available for all year 4 children in Lincolnshire as part of the Lincolnshire Domestic Abuse Partnership Healthy Relationships programme,

All year 4 students will be offered this interactive workshop which is based around interactive activities and discussion. During the workshop students will complete activities based around the key aspects of communication.

Students will understand how communication can be interpreted positively and negatively by other people. They will discuss effective communication and engage in activities around:

  • writing
  • reading
  • listening
  • talking

They will explore their own point of view, but also try to understand how they interpret messages from others.

Students will be identify how communication is not just about how we interact with our speech, but also to explore how their instructions, body language, tone of voice and their choice of words can help someone feel positive or negative.

Students will then have the opportunity to complete active listening activities. This will look at how people can disrupt conversations, to understand how it feels when we are not listened to. They will learn that when they are listened to, they can feel validated and their mood can improve.

This workshop will enable students to:

  • understand four key areas of communication
  • understand the importance of respectful communication
  • improve on their own communication skills
