Children currently learning in temporary school buildings - Find a freedom of information request

Request

Could you please provide estimates of:

1. The number of children currently learning in temporary school buildings in your local area;

2. The amount of money that has been spent on temporary school buildings since 1 July 2020 in your local area.

Decision

1. There are currently 73 mobile buildings on school sites used by the school. However in terms of the number of pupils currently learning in temporary school buildings that would depend on the school PAN, on whether the mobile is used as a single year classroom on a daily basis or as a resources space used by multiple year groups, or it may be that it is just used for storage or a staff room etc…. it would be impossible to give an exact number of pupils. There are a further 38 used by Early years for nursery provision but these aren’t statutory school age children.

2. Schools are responsible for their own budgets so we would not be able to provide an idea of the amount of money spent on temporary buildings. Every school would need to be approached to request this data. The Authority would only pick up any costs if repairs exceeded £10,000 and the temp building was an LCC asset (ie on an LCC maintained school site). LCC would not pick up any repair costs for temp buildings at Academies or where schools have purchased temporary buildings directly without LCC awareness.
