Double and Single Handed Care within Adult Social Care at Home.

Request

RE: To better understand the policies, practices, and rationale behind double- and single-handed care within adult social care at home.

1.1 Do you have any official policy guidelines that describe what qualifies someone to receive double- or single-handed care?

1.2 If so, what is the rationale that underlies these guidelines and what determines the level of care someone can receive?

2. In practice, are there any issues or barriers that have been encountered when implementing either double- or single-handed care?

3.1 Has there been a shift in the qualifying criteria for someone who can receive double-handed care? (i.e. how long has your current policy been in place, how is it different to anything that existed previously?)

3.2 If there is a preference towards single-handed care, what is the rationale behind this and how has this been managed?

Decision

1.1. Each case is assessed on presenting needs and decision taken by the assessor to establish level of care required. Assessor should ensure that relevant professional advice such as Occupational therapy assessment is considered.

1.2. Not Applicable

2. No, equipment solutions to promote double handed care are in place.

3.1. As mentioned earlier level of support required is identified on a case by case basis.

3.2. There is always a preference for the least restrictive practice and an understanding that double handed care can be expensive both for the person and the organisation.
