Unlicensed Melatonin Products

This request relates to enforcement activity concerning unlicensed melatonin products, such as melatonin gummies, supplements, capsules, or other forms of presentation, which are not authorised as licensed medicines in the UK.



I would be grateful if you could provide the following information held by your authority (or, if more appropriate, by your Trading Standards team) for the period 1 January 2020 to the most recent available date:



1. The number of reports, complaints, or referrals received concerning unlicensed melatonin products

2. The number of seizures, detentions, or removals of such products undertaken or recorded by your authority

3. The total estimated value of products seized (if available)



Where possible, I would appreciate it if the information could be provided broken down by calendar year.



If your authority does not hold this information, I would be grateful if you could confirm this and, pass this request to the relevant team within your Trading Standards service or advise me of the appropriate authority to contact.

The detection of melatonin means products marketed as  food supplements, must be regulated as a medicine.  This requests would also need to be sent to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
